Other systems may categorize food into whole grains/cereals, refined grains/cereals, vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes, eggs, dairy products, fish, red meat, processed meat, and sugar-sweetened beverages.

The Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization utilize a comprehensive system with nineteen food classifications.

These classifications include cereals, roots, pulses and nuts, milk, eggs, fish and shellfish, meat, insects, vegetables, fruits, fats and oils, sweets and sugars, spices and condiments, beverages, foods for nutritional uses, food additives, composite dishes, and savory snacks.


Sources of Food :


(1) Plants as a Source of Food :

Plants, trees, crops, bushes, leaves, and roots are major sources of the food we eat. Fruits and vegetables, which grow on plants, are the most obvious examples of plant-based food. Crops such as rice, wheat, maize, millets, barley, etc. are another source of food obtained from plants. After they are grown, the seeds of the crop plants are harvested and processed into various food items like flour, bread, biscuits, etc.

Herbivores are animals that only consume food obtained from plants. Cows, zebras, hippos, giraffes, buffalos, and many more are examples of herbivores. On the other hand, humans who rely only on plant-based food are called vegetarians.

Let us take at examples of some foods we get from plants and their different parts -

(a) Fruits : Apples, Oranges, Bananas, Mangoes

(b) Leaves : Spinach, Coriander, Kale, Lettuce

(c) Root : Potato, Carrots, Turnips

(d) Seeds : Rice, wheat, maize, nuts (peanuts, almonds)








(2) Animals as a Source of Food :

While a significant portion of our food comes from plants, not all of it does. Animals are also a source of food for us, particularly cattle which are raised specifically for meat production. However, some animals are hunted in their natural habitats, such as deer, rabbits, and even kangaroos in Australia.

Some examples of such meat and their sources are -

(a) Chicken (poultry)

(b) Bacon/pork which comes from pigs

(c) Mutton which is from lambs

(d) Venison from deer

(e) Beef from cows and buffalos

(f) Chevon which is goat meat








Other sources :

Seafood is another source of food, consisting of fish and other sea creatures such as crabs, lobsters, and oysters, which are caught and consumed by humans. Dairy products, including milk, curd, cream, cheese, butter, and eggs, are also obtained from animals like cows, buffalos, and goats. Honey is another animal-sourced food obtained from bees.

Carnivores like lions, tigers, and leopards consume other animals, while omnivores like dogs and cats eat both plants and animals. People who consume meat or fish are generally referred to as non-vegetarians.
